this section we hope to answer the most frequently asked questions
about United Way.
Just what does United Way do_
United Way is a locally incorporated, nonprofit organization
that is the single largest nongovernmental funder of health
and human services in our community. United Way campaign dollars

efficient and accountable system for investing in the community.
Why should I give_
Supporting agencies like KARE, REACH, Meals On Wheels,
Council On Aging means you are giving to programs dealing
with domestic violence, child abuse, senior services just
to name a few. Knowing you have made a difference will
make you feel great!
Why not just give directly to the agencies_
Here are several reasons that United Way is one of
the best ways to give.
Contributing through United Way guarantees agencies'
funds they can rely on and plan for, rather than become dependent
on sporadic contributions.
United Way's community-based oversight assure
that the charities you support through United Way adhere to
sound fiscal policies and provide needed services.
Giving through United Way reduces costly and time consuming
fund-raising efforts for the agencies, so their time can be
spent providing critical services.
How is United Way accountable_
United Way's own operating budget is audited by an
independent accounting firm and is carefully scrutinized by
the Board of Directors. Because hundreds of volunteers help
raise and distribute the money, 87¢ out of every dollar goes
to community services.
Where does my money go_
Your money doesn't stay at United Way! Instead, your gift
is working in organizations like Arc of Haywood, Parents Against
Teen Suicide, Haywood Christian Ministry, FRIENDS Program
and 18 other health and human services agencies here in Haywood
County.
How are United Way agencies accountable to United
Way contributors_
Every United Way agency meets these high standards
to assure you quality and efficiency:
Recognized by the IRS as a nonprofit organization.
Governed by a volunteer board of directors.
Provides for a human care need.
Audited annually by a CPA firm.
Annually presents entire budget, program plan and outcomes
to a panel of community volunteers.
Operates at a reasonable cost.
Don't the agencies receive government funds_
United Way funding often allows agencies to leverage
grants and available government funds, which maximizes
their resources. However, shrinking government dollars
means private funding like United Way is more important than
ever.
I never use agency services, so why should I give_
You never know when you, a member of your family
or neighbor may need a United Way service. Job loss, of a
loved one, illness, disabilities, family problems, and the
problems of growing up or growing old know no boundaries.
Your gift helps ensure that United Way services are available
when they are needed. Anyone who has been involved in
Scouting or taken a Red Cross first aid or water course has
been served by a United Way agency.

governed by a local volunteer board of directors. Policies,
activities, and agencies we support are determined right here
