What is the ARC of Haywood County, Inc_ 

The ARC is an organization that seeks to promote the education and well-being of children and adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

This association is governed by an 13-member Board of Directors whose actions are controlled by the membership.  It is a non-profit organization supported by membership dues, donations, fund-raising efforts, and contributions from United Way.   It is a voluntary association where no members of its governing board receive remuneration.

A local chapter of the state and national associations for retarded and developmentally disabled citizens.   A portion of the local membership dues provides financial support of the state and national associations.

Your support through membership enables ARC to:

PROMOTE the research necessary to help children and adults who are mentally retarded and developmentally disabled.

PIONEER innovative programs and services to meet the needs of children and adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities and their families.  Locally, The ARC of Haywood County Residential Services has in operation four Group Homes serving both male and female mentally retarded and developmentally disabled adults who are 18 year of age or older.  An Apartment Living Program that provides living skills needed for independent community living.

ENCOURAGE progressive government policy.  Both state and national ARC offices provide full-paid advocated for retarded and developmentally disabled people to insure that legislative actions are responsive to the needs of special people.

INFORM more people of the needs and potential of people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

DEVELOP employment opportunities for people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.  The ARC of Haywood County works closely with community businesses and Haywood Vocational Opportunities.

EDUCATE the public about prevention of mental retardation and developmental disabilities.
