The services offered are to prevent
disease and sickness by providing preventative medicine, education, early diagnosis and a
safe, healthful environment.
The Haywood County Health Department
provides many services to residents of Haywood county and surrounding areas. The
Health Department has a full-time staff consisting of the health director, public health
nurses, environmental health specialists, nutritionists, health educators, lab
technicians, social workers, maternal outreach workers, health check coordinators, medical
office assistants, and a professional management support staff. |

Pregnancy
Testing
Provides counseling, testing, and referrals. Monday - Friday, 8:00-10:00 am.
Family
Planning Clinic
Provides education on methods of birth control, limited physical exam, diagnosis and
treatment of common female problems, and birth control supplies. (Financial
eligibility on a sliding scale.) Appointment Required.
Women's
Health Clinic
Provides PAP smear, clinical breast exam, and mammography as age appropriate to women who
are financially eligible. Breast Self Exam taught. Appointment Required.
Prenatal
Clinic
Provides access to doctor's care for pregnant Medicaid-eligible patients. Patients
are enrolled in support services and Public Health Educators offer childbirth classes. Appointment
Required.
Maternal Care Coordination (MCC)
The Baby Love Program provides regular Public Health Nurse visits which
inform expectant mothers of healthful htmlects of care before and after their baby is
born. Nurses ensure awareness of community resources and assist accessing services.
Maternal Outreach Worker (MOW)
Outreach workers work with the Baby Love Program and closely assist women
who are at risk for problems during pregnancy. This includes home visits, assistance
with daily living skills, and other resources needed during pregnancy. MOW follows
women during pregnancy and her child through the first year of life.
WIC
Nutrition Program
WIC is a federally funded program that provides foods and education for women, infants,
and children with nutritional needs. Nutritionists provide counseling as needed. Appointment
Required.
Child
Health Clinic
Provides physical exams, laboratory testing, limited diagnosis, treatment,
and developmental screening and education for children birth through school age. Appointment
Required.
Health
Check
Coordinators assist Medicaid-eligible children to seek well-child
check-ups at doctor's offices.
School
Health
A Public Health Nurse is assigned to each school in Haywood County. The nurse
provides health education and routine screening for vision, Scoliosis, and communicable
diseases. Other health-related problems are referred to the nurse for screening and
referral.
Immunizations are provided on-site for
specific age levels.
Children's Special Health Services
Provides clinical and financial assistance for children with specific
chronic health problems who are financially eligible. Includes a Speech and
Hearing Clinic and an Orthopedic Clinic.
Child Service Coordination
Haywood County residents from birth to 5 years of age with special needs are
identified for help in obtaining access to support services. The CSC Program is
available to children up to 3 years old with potential risk for developmental
delay/disability, chronic illness, and/or social.emotional disorder.
Community and Worksite Wellness Program
Public Health Nurses and Health Educators visit industry/worksites monthly
to provide the following services:
- blood pressure screening, counseling,
referral
- adult tetanus/diphtheria immunizations
- health education information on various
topics
Healthy Living classes are offered once a
month at the health department.
Health Education Services
Public Health Educators provide information and programs on various health
topics in schools, community settings, and agency clinics. Educators give the public
updates on health issues, policies, and statistics.
Environmental
Health
The Environmental Health Specialists protect the public through supervision and inspection
of septic tank systems, water supplies, schools and lunchrooms, restaurants, meat markets,
hospitals, lodging places, and summer camps. |
